South Africa coach Desiree Ellis has disclosed that the team must avoid any margin for error ahead of tonight’s 2027 Women’s World Cup playoff against Nigeria’s Super Falcons at the Stade Moulay Rachid in Casablanca, Morocco.

The encounter comes after Nigeria and South Africa were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations by Cameroon and Morocco, respectively, with both teams now fighting for passage to the Inter-Confederation Playoff Tournament, which is the remaining route to the 2027 World Cup in Brazil.

Thursday’s encounter could prove even more fierce than any of their past encounters, with both teams eager to advance and reach the Inter-Confederations Playoff Tournament after failing to reach the Women’s AFCON semi finals.

However, speaking ahead of the game, Ellis, in a chat with Sowetan, stated that Banyana will bring their A game when they face Nigeria tonight.

“It’s not a place we want to be, but we have been given another opportunity. It’s a very big opportunity to go on a very long journey, so we have to grab the opportunity with both hands. We obviously have to bring our A game…there’s no margin for error.

“The disappointment of losing the previous game is going to probably drive us to get a positive result. It’s not going to be an easy game, it’s the two big guns of Africa football,” Ellis said.

The fixture rekindles a rivalry that has produced some of the most memorable encounters in African women’s football. Nigeria edged South Africa 2-1 in their last meeting at the 2025 WAFCON semifinal, with Michelle Alozie scoring a spectacular added-time winner in Casablanca.

Banyana Banyana have been victorious over the Super Falcons in three editions of the Women Africa Cup of Nations, 2012, 2018 and 2022. However, those are three of only four competitive matches in which South Africa’s senior women have beaten their Nigerian counterparts, with the 10-time African champions having defeated Banyana in 17 other clashes.
