Xabi Alonso was happy with the impact Emi Martinez made on his Chelsea debut and believes the goalkeeper’s ‘aura to influence’ will help the Blues throughout the season.

The Argentine international’s arrival from Aston Villa was confirmed this (Sunday) morning. Martinez signed a three-year contract at Stamford Bridge and went straight into our starting XI for Brighton and Hove Albion’s visit.

Martinez looked instantly at home and produced several impressive reaction stops throughout our 4-3 victory, which came through goals from Romeo Lavia, Pedro Neto, Joao Pedro and Cole Palmer.

Alonso was not surprised by the ease with which Martinez settled into the Chelsea side, and only expects the goalkeeper’s influence to increase going forward.

He said on chelseafc.com: “Emi is a World Cup winner, is 33 years old, and is very experienced. I spoke with him yesterday (Saturday) and we talked about the game and our team. He felt ready, and I don’t have to tell him many things for him to perform.

“Even today, while a goalkeeper wants to keep a clean sheet, I am happy with his impact. He has been in the building just 48 hours, so now we will have a whole week to prepare for the next one.

“Day by day, we will feel this presence because he has this charisma, this aura to influence and have a very positive connection with the rest of the team.“
